St.Patrick's Athletic moved six points comfortably clear of the Premier Division relegation zone when a 28th minute goal from Declan 'Fabio' O'Brien was enough to give them victory over bottom club Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds on Monday night.

Bray had early chances when first a long range effort by Dave Mulcahy was deflected for a corner by midfielder Stuart Byrne. Then winger Gareth Coughlan fired over after striker Jake Kelly had set up the chance.

The Inchcicore men took the lead when a long ball over the top of the Bray defence from David Partridge allowed striker O'Brien to cleverly lob the ball over advancing Bray 'keeper Chris O'Connor from 30 yards into the unguarded net for his first league goal for the club.

The Saints went close to stretching their lead when defender Enda Stevens cut the ball back for Ryan Guy who miscued his shot only for Mark Quigley to fire over from the edge of the box.

American striker Ryan Guy did have a chance for the visitors after 68 minutes but shot into the side-netting after the chance had been created on the right by defender Damien Lynch.

Even the introduction of substitutes Stephen Brennan, Ian Tuohy and Dave Webster during the second half could not spark any life into a Bray side although defender Derek Foran did have a header over the bar after a Dane Massey free on the left.

Bray Wanderers - O'Connor; Pender, Foran, Deans (Webster 79), Massey; Coughlan (Tuohy 69), Mulcahy, Shields, McCabe; Kelly (Brennan 45), Flood.

St.Patrick's Athletic - Clarke; Lynch, Gavin, Partridge, Stevens; Guy, Byrne, Dempsey, D.Ryan (B.Ryan 82); O'Brien (Lester 82), Quigley (Leech 89).

Referee - David McKeon (Dublin).
