Nothing to report for seventy five minutes and suddenly a glut as Derry eventually shook off a determined Drogheda side that conceded a couple of soft goals late on. Â
Mark Farren will remember his jousts with the Louth side this season as his brace in this one took his personal tally to six against United this term.
Derry created the first moment of danger early on when Shane McEleney knocked the ball off a home defender into the path of Thomas Stuart. However, keeper Steve Williams was smartly off his line to discommode the striker who lifted his effort wide. As City continued to dominate Williams was called into action twice more as he saved from Barry Molloy and was well positioned to gather a Liam Kearney free from thirty yards. It was twenty five minutes before Drogheda threatened when they won a free out on the left which Ross Gaynor sent into Conor Kenna who guided his header narrowly wide. Â
This would be the home side’s only offensive effort of the opening half as the Candystripes continued to dominate to the break. Ciaran Martyn was denied by Williams, Stuart’s shot was blocked as it careered towards goal by Conor Kenna and Thomas McManus drove his shot wildly wide from a very good position.
The second half was a much more even affair as both sides had their share of chances. McManus headed narrowly wide and then stabbed the ball just past the post for City while at the other end Robbie Martin lifted his effort over the bar from close range and Brendan McGills shot was saved by Gerard Doherty. Â
As the game opened up Williams was at his very best again turning Kearney’s snap shot round the post. From the corner Derry went close once more when no one picked up Kearney but Kenna was on the line to head clear and save United. With quarter of an hour remaining Derry broke the deadlock when Kenna inadvertently helped the ball into the path of Mark Farren who steered it past the advancing Williams. Â
City’s lead lasted only four minutes when Robbie Farrell’s fine ball saw Jamie Duffy outpace Peter Hutton to drive past Doherty for the equaliser. Â
The visitors won it eight minutes from the end as the home defence afforded the freedom of the park to Thomas McManus who picked his spot with ease. And Mark Farren completed a good night’s work for Stephen Kenny’s men when he scored his second of the night four minutes into additional time.
