Cork City 0-1 Waterford United

A late strike from Waterford’s Joe Mulcahy was the difference between the sides on Saturday afternoon as Paul Doolin began the clubs pre season campaign.

The manager had signalled his intentions to field a side filled with trialists, and true to his word, only Mark McNulty, Darragh Ryan and Sean Kelly were the recognisable City players in the starting eleven which took the field before the 400 strong crowd.

With such an experimental line up it was inevitable that the game proved to be a disappointing spectacle. Six second half substitutions highlighted the large number of trirlaists on show and eager to impress in a game of very few clear cut chances. The games only goal came at the very end of the match. A Waterford corner in time added on wasn’t held by substitute City ‘keeper Gary Philpott and Joe Mulcahy was on hand to fire the ball to the back of the hosts net.

Cork City: Mark McNulty, Darragh Ryan, Robert Mezeckis, Sean Kelly, Shane Duggan, Tacio Santos, Matthias Kullstrom, Guntars Silgailis, Timmy Purcell, Gints Freimanis, Daniel Gattering.

Half time Substitutions: Davin O’Neill, Timmy Kiely, David Brito, Levi Reid.
Second Half Substitutions: Alan O’Connor, Gary Philpott.
Subs not used: Fabio Leoncini, Paul Deasy.
