Galway United 0-3 Dundalk
Friday, 17 July 2009 21:00

Dundalk were far too classy for an understrength Galway United at Terryland Park as Michael Collins headed two crucial goals.

Collins was influential for Dundalk who were never disturbed by a Galway outfit that sorely missed the suspended trio of Galway were without Shane Guthrie, Michael McGrath, and skipper Jay O'Shea.

John Russell was honest in the centre of the park for the understrength locals who battled, but simply couldn't match Dundalk's power.

Dundalk ought to have grabbed a 17th minute lead when goalkeeper Peter Cherrie launched a kick out deep into Galway territory, but Barry Ryan denied Alex Williams.

Galway then enjoyed a small spell of supremacy as Alan Murphy and Vinny Faherty went close, but Dundalk came storming back in the 28th minute.

Kevin McKinley's clever corner was met by a firm Collins header, and Dundalk were suddenly armed with the lead.

With Tiernan Mulvenna effective on the right Dundalk continued to press, and the pacy winger dragged a 36th minute shot wide as Sean Connor's charges sought to increase their advantage.

Dundalk grabbed the second goal they deserved in the 59th minute when Williams converted Ger Rowe's assist with a delightful low drive. Galway were in trouble, and a third was netted on 71 as Collins supplied another headed goal following a McKinley corner.
