Galway United fought back to beat St Patrick’s Athletic 2-1 at Richmond Park on Friday evening. Ryan Guy gave the home side the lead just before half-time, but two goals in the second period from Jay O’Shea and Sean Kelly handed the three points to Galway. The Tribesmen got back into the game when they won a penalty for a handball inside the box by Jason Gavin. O’Shea stepped up and coolly slotted in the spot-kick. Only two minutes after drawing level, Ian Foster’s team took the lead with a stunning long-range strike from midfielder Sean Kelly that proved to be the winner. St Pat’s actually started the game quite well with Guy proving to be a constant threat up front and they had a number of chances with Darragh Ryan, Gareth O’Connor, Bobby Ryan, and David Partridge all coming close. O’Connor was the most creative player for The Super Saints and it was his corner that picked out Partridge for their best chance, but the Welsh defender was unable to keep his header down. Galway had some chances of their own with David Cooke and Michael McGrath both coming close, although it was St Pat’s that took the lead on 43 minutes. Guy did brilliantly to rise highest in the box and meet a Stephen Maher cross. The US native powered his header at goal and goalkeeper Barry Ryan couldn’t keep it out. The lead that the hosts brought in at half-time quickly disappeared when John Russell won a penalty on 56 minutes as he tried to chip the ball over Gavin, only for the ball to hit the arm of the centre-back. O'Shea made no mistake from twelve yards. However, there was nothing that St Pat’s could do about the next goal as Kelly unleashed a powerful effort that flew past keeper Gary Rogers and into the back of the net. After beating Cork City earlier in the week, this defeat will hurt for the Inchicore outfit, but Galway’s solid play should not be discounted as they worked hard throughout to keep the hosts at bay when the pressure came on.
