Cork City 1 Dundalk 2
Friday, 19 June 2009 22:45
Dundalk took bragging rights at Turner’s Cross when they out-classed and out-played Cork City.

Sean Connor’s men were full value for their win as they more attractive and attack-orientated football put them in control of the game from early on. And with Cork not helping their cause with their very conservative formation, Dundalk were in control in every facet.

Dundalk took the lead after 34 minutes when a Darren Mansaram speculative cross bounced in the penalty and, inexplicably, with the ball bouncing harmlessly away Dan Connor rushed from the goal and upended Declan O’Brien. Chris Turners duly scored the resultant penalty.

Worse was to follow for Cork City when Shane Duggan was sent off for a second yellow card, awarded for petulantly throwing the ball at Dundalk captain Thomas Heary’s head.

And four minutes later they were two behind when Michael Daly won a race for a Michael Coburn ball over the top with Dan Connor and lifted the ball to the net for Dundalk’s second.

Forced to throw caution to the wind Cork attacked after the break but had to wait until the 82nd minute for any reward when Denis Behan smashed a drive from the edge of the area to the back of the net.
