Brian King landed a crucial 66th minute blow at Terryland Park as Drogheda United came from behind to take a deserved share of the spoils. Trailing to Vinny Faherty’s sixth minute opener Drogheda showed grit and determination to eke out a draw. Having taken four points from their past two matches Drogheda United weren’t short on confidence. The manner in which Cork City were dismissed during the week augured well, and Drogs were keen to make an enterprising start in the west. But it was Galway who hit the front in the sixth minute when Michael McGrath created the chance for Vinny Faherty to bundle the locals ahead. McGrath’s midfield colleague John Russell was also effective in the first half passing and probing as Galway sought to stretch their lead. Twenty eight minutes in Jay O’Shea was fouled by Conor Kenna in the area as referee Padraig Sutton awarded Galway a penalty. O’Shea’s strike didn’t lack power, but Drogs custodian Paul Skinner made a delightful save to thwart the Republic of Ireland under 21 international. Relieved after that let off Drogs showed admirable enthusiasm when the action recommenced in the second half. Eventually a leveller was nicked in the 66th minute when Brian King rattled the Galway net after Robbie Clarke’s precise cross.
