Defenders Shaun Holmes and Alan Keane turned goalscorers as Sligo Rovers jumped to seventh in the Premier Division table.

Holmes and Keane were both on the mark in the first half, as Paul Cook’s side overcame fifth-placed Galway United by two goals to nil at The Showgrounds on Saturday.

Holmes struck first – claiming his first goal for the Sligo club when he fired to the bottom corner of the net after just seven minutes.

Keane doubled the lead with his third goal in four games on 31 minutes. The former Galway player sent Barry Ryan the wrong way from the spot after Cian McBrien tripped Richie Ryan inside the area.

Galway had started brightly with Vinny Faherty forcing a fine save off Richard Brush after just three minutes.

Galway remained competitive despite conceding twice, but it wasn’t until captain Jay O’Shea turned on the style in the second half that Galway started putting the home side under pressure.

Conor O’Grady and Gavin Peers were forced to put in last ditch tackles to prevent John Russell and O’Shea from getting shots in, while Brush made a full-length diving save to keep out O’Shea’s curling shot.

Derek O’Brien also went close with a low free-kick, but Rovers too had chances, with Richie Ryan forcing a fine save off Barry Ryan.

The introduction of Brian Cash, Sean Doherty and Steve Feeney helped Rovers to see out the game, while Galway’s misery was completed when Russell was sent-off for a second bookable offence in the final minutes.
