Padraig Amond made it three goals in two games as Shamrock Rovers strengthened their grip on fourth spot in the Premier Division. Amond hit a double and captain Shane Robinson struck the third as the Hoops outclassed Sligo Rovers at The Showgrounds. To add to their misery, Rovers had captain Conor O’Grady sent off on 77 minutes and substitute Stephen Parkhouse missed a penalty in the closing stages. Looking to maintain the pressure on the top three, the Hoops started brightly and Ollie Cahill flashed a shot over the top after three minutes. The closest the home side came was when Morrison swung in a free from the right that evaded everyone before flying the wrong side of the far post. The visitors opened the scoring on 24 minutes, when Stephen Bradley did brilliant to direct Robinson’s crossfield ball across goal for the inrushing Amond to finish. They doubled their lead through Amond’s second, when he fired into the bottom corner from outside the area on 28 minutes. The home side came out with intent in the second half but they failed to test Hoops keeper Barry Murphy. Amond should have got his third on 58 minutes, when the excellent Robinson picked him out in space in front of goal, but his shot was saved by Brush. But Robinson put the result beyond doubt on 70 minutes, when he sent Brush the wrong way from the spot after he was tripped by O’Grady inside the area. Rovers’ misery was compounded when O’Grady was shown a straight red after he kicked out at Patrick Flynn after he was fouled. Murphy then secured a clean sheet by directing Parkhouse’s 81st minute penalty round the post.
