Jeff Kenna’s Terryland Park return ended in defeat as Galway United claimed a critical Terryland Park victory. Trounced by Galway on the opening night of the season Kenna was eager to avoid a similarly embarrassing result against his previous club, but the Tribesmen weren’t bothered. Five minutes in though Kenna watched in despair as Galway punished the Saints defensive inadequacies. Jay O’Shea thumped a corner into the box, and Gary Breen guided the ball through a cluster of bodies as Galway made a dream start. And while Galway’s football was clever for much of the first half they still conceded in the 32nd minute when a rare Breen error led to a penalty. Stuart Byrne reacted quickly following a poor Breen touch, and the Galway defender was then punished for a foul. Mark Quigley drilled the resultant spot-kick home, and the teams trotted off deadlocked at the interval. But that altered significantly two minutes into the second period as a deflected O’Shea free-kick put Galway back in front. Galway United: Ryan; Conneely, Guthrie, Breen, Davoren; Cooke, Kelly (McBrien, 44), Russell (Edwards, 69), O’Brien (O’Toole, 81); O’Shea; Faherty. St Patrick’s Athletic: Rogers; Maher, Harris, Partridge, Stevens; Lynch, Byrne (O’Connor, 78), Cawley, Ryan; Quigley, Guy. Referee: D Hanney (Dublin). |
