DUNDALK moved out of the relegation area following what proved a sensational victory at the Brandywell last night.

Towering striker, Darren Mansaram, appeared to get a back-flick to Ger Rowe's header following an early second half Chris Turner and the ball made its way into the net as a number of Derry City defenders attempted to clear.

And as a result of this, their second consecutive home defeat of the season, Stephen Kenny’s side drop to third place following Cork’s victory over Galway.

Indeed the Candystripes appear to be developing a dangerous habit of  losing their concentration during the early stages of the second half as was the situation last week at the Carlisle Grounds.

Having practically owned the ball throughout the first half, Derry struggled to find the net despite having created several clear-cut openings.

And as a result of the home side's failure in the front line, Dundalk boss, Sean Connor, will have been delighted to enter the half-time break on level terms.

Derry’s Thomas Stewart and Steven Gray constantly penetrated on the left flank during that lively opening period but for all their work, they were constantly let down by their front-line.

In fact this pairing fashioned two glorious chances for Mark Farren and Sammy Morrow but both Derry strikers failed to hit the target when well placed to do so.

It was also worth noting that Dundalk also had their problems with their captain, Thomas Heary, failing a pre-match test and centre-half, Simon Kelly, limping off after just 14 minutes with a leg injury - forcing a number of early positional switches.

However, the overworked visiting defence held firm with centre-half, and former Derry City player, Dave Rogers, producing an outstanding performance when moved into the heart of tthe Dundalk defence.

As was the case at the Carlisle Grounds, Derry were severely punished for their inepitude in front of goal when Dundalk sensationally broke the deadlock through what was a particularly soft strike during the early stages of the second half.

And it was a soft goal to concede from a Derry point of view, Rowe getting a 'free' header before Mansaram's touch seemed to deflect off the leg of Barry Molloy as the ball crossed the line.

Derry huffed and puffed afterwards and while substitute, Tam McManus and Ciaran Martyn had chances to equalise, both failed to hit the target.
