St Patrick's Ath 1 Shamrock Rovers 1 (St Pat's won 3-1 on pens) EVAN McMILLAN hit the decisive penalty in the shoot-out as St Pat's eliminated Shamrock Rovers from the EA Sports Cup.  This 3-1 defeat on penalties after extra-time continues the Hoops' poor record from spot-kicks in recent tiomes. As he did in the league game at Derry City on Friday, Danny North popped up with a late penalty which forced extra-time at Inchicore.  A Dean Kelly penalty looked to have edged Shamrock Rovers into the last eight in a tight match art Richmond Park until North struck on 89 minutes.  Substitute North was taken down by Rovers replacement right-back Jeff Flood and duly dusted himself down to send Ryan Thompson the wrong way.  St. Pat's shaded the first half on possession with Hoops skipper Pat Flynn having to clear off the line from David McMillan, but Rovers produced the best opening on 24 minutes.  Paddy Kavanagh worked a one-two with Dean Kelly to run on and bring a good stop from Chris Bennion.  David McMillan missed a sitter with a header for St. Pat's on 57 minute which proved costly as Rovers got their winner a minute later.  Ciaran Kildfuf was upended by Bennion as he raced into the area and Dean Kelly shot home the resultant penalty.  With extra-time failing to separate the sides, it went to penalties.  Bennion saved from Kilduff and Colm Corcoran while Flynn shot wide off a post.  Bradley and John Flood scored from the spot for St. Pat's before Evan McMillan rifled in the winner.  |
