Drogheda shock Seagulls
Monday, 28 March 2011 22:48

DROGHEDA UNITED caused an upset against fellow Premier Division side Bray Wanderers with an impressive victory in Monday night's EA Sports Cup First Round clash at the Carlisle Grounds.

Mick Cooke's men went into the tie lying bottom of the Premier Division but produced an impressive display to progress to the Second Round.

United had their noses in front on 61 minutes when a long cross from the left by Philip McDonagh allowed unmarked winger Sean Skelly to blast the ball home from close range past 'keeper Brian Kane.

Both Dane Massey and Jake Kelly went close to an equaliser late on for the Seagulls, but the Drogheda defence held firm.

Donegal junior club Cockhill Celtic produced the upset of the round with a 3-1 win over Galway United at Terryland Park.

Jospeh Yoffe gave the home side the opener after 37 minutes but William O’Connor levelled less than a minute later.

Paul McKinney became the Celtic hero on the night with a double either side of half-time to dump Sean Connor’s side from the competition.

Derry City almost suffered a similar shock in Galway as they required extra-time to beat First Division Salthill Devon 4-2 at Drom.

Etanda Nkololo put Salthill ahead in the 35th minute but this was cancelled out by James McClean ten minutes into the second half.

Victor Collins scrambled the home side back in front four minutes later but Emmet Friars headed the Candystripes level in the 75th minute.

After a brave 90 minutes, goals by Ryan McBride after 112 minutes and Gareth McGlynn two minutes later gave City an extra-time win.

Longford Town gave UCD a fright at Flancare Park. The Students went ahead through Graham Rusk after seven minutes then Robbie Creevy extended their lead from the spot after Town keeper Alvin Rouse was adjudged to have fouled Robbie Benson.

The Midlanders got back in the tie via a 72nd minute penalty from Mark Salmon after Don Cowan appeared to be fouled by Creevy. In injury-time Cowan headed Town level from a Jacques Morley cross.

Martin Russell’s Students held firm reacted well and snatched the winner through Rusk two minutes into injury-time with a goal that Longford fans had claimed was offside.

Shelbourne progressed comfortably past FC Carlow, who had James Cogley dismissed in the 74th minute, with Ian Ryan, Ray Scully, Lorcan Fitzgerald and Philip Hughes all finding the net.

Mervue United won the other game on the night against Finn Harps with a 97th minute Rory Gaffney penalty after Peter Dravins was taken down in the box by Packie Mailey.
