LONGFORD TOWN and Salthill Devon each recorded home victories in the EA Sports Cup Preliminary Round on Monday.

EA SPORTS CUP

PRELIMINARY ROUND

Longford Town 2 Athlone Town 1

LONGFORD TOWN progressed to the First Round proper of the EA Sports Cup after a tightly contested Preliminary Round clash with local rivals Athlone Town.

Tony Cousins saw his side opened the deadlock in the 31st minute when Craig Walsh curled home a free-kick from just outside the penalty box after a foul on Don Cowan.

Cowan drilled in Longford's second goal after good set-up play from Mike Lee in the 58th minute.

Athlone pulled one back in the 78th minute when Kevin Williamson’s corner found the head of Alan Coffey and Alvin Rouse failed to keep the ball out.

Longford will now meet UCD in the First Round.

Salthill Devon 2 Fanad United 0

Salthill Devon secured a 2-0 Preliminary Round victory over Fanad United in Drom on Monday.

The home side opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Trevor Collins shot low past Paul Given - brother of Ireland keeper Shay.

Given had saved a penalty from Cian McBrien seven minutes earlier.

Daniel Rupa added a second goal for the Galwegians in injury time when he lobbed the Fanad keeper into an empty net after Given had come forward for a last ditch attempt to score from a corner.

Salthill Devon will meet Derry City at home in the next round.
