CORK CITY secured a crucial win at home to Longford to stay top of the First Division while Limerick shocked Monaghan United at Gortakeegan.

Cork City 3 Longford Town 1

Goals from Davin O'Neill, Daryl Horgan and a late penalty from topscorer Graham Cummins put Cork City back top of the First Division table and within touching distance of promotion.

Tommy Dunne's side now may only need a point, if that, from their final game away to Shelbourne next week to ensure a return to the top flight after two years.

Longford stunned the big Turner's Cross crowd of almost 3,500 to take the lead through Mark Salmon after just six minutes.

But Cork were level within 20 minutes when Davin O'Neill followed up to score from the rebound after Paul Hunt could only parry a shot from Vinny Sullivan.

The home side got well on top and took the lead five minutes into the second half with Horgan running clear onto a ball over the top to lob Hunt.

Dan Purdy then conceded a penalty for a foul on Derek O'Brien in the 86th minute which Cummins shot to the net.

Monaghan United 0 Limerick FC 1

Pauid Quinn's early winner kept Limerick's faint hopes of promotion alive as they earned a massive result at Gortakeegan.

The only strike of the game came on six minutes when Monaghan keeper Gabriel Save seemed to lose the flight of Quinn's shot which ended up in the net.

Monaghan, missing Brennan brothers Sean and Ryan due to suspension, slowly came into the game and Eric Foley forced a good save from Barry Ryan before half-time.

Despite their best efforts after the break, Roddy Collins side failed to get the goal back and may now need to win their final game next week to ensure they even get the play-off.

Waterford United 2 Mervue United 0

A brilliant goal from Dwayne Wilson put the gloss on Waterford's third win on the spin as they secured fifth place finish in the First Division.

Defender Seamus Long put Blues ahead in the final minute of the first half when working a one-two with Sean Maguire before toeing a shot past Ger Hanley in the Mervue goal.

Wilson sealed the points on 85 minutes with a spectacular strike when volleying home Paul Phelan's cross from a tight angle.
