RODDY COLLINS saw his Monaghan United side record a memorable victory over Shelbourne to give their promotion hopes a major boost.
Shelbourne 1 Monaghan United 2 HAVING scored three goals between then in last week's dramatic win over Longford Town, Brennan's Sean and Ryan worked the oracle for Monaghan yet again with the goals that sunk leaders Shelbourne in this top of the table clash at Tolka Park.
The win moves Roddy Collins side to within four points of Shels with a game in hand ahead of their trip to meet third-placed Cork City on Tuesday night.
Sean put Monaghan in front on 31 minutes when the ball broke to him off team-mate Declan O'Brien and he shot beyond Paul Skinner.
Philly Hughes levelled for Shels on 62 minutes - scoring for the fourth match running - as he latched onto a loose ball to smash a shot to the roof of the net.
But Monaghan won it seven minutes later. O'Brien laid the ball off for Ryan Brennan who scored from close range.
Cork City 5 Finn Harps 2
GRAHAM CUMMINS scored twice as Cork kept up their promotion quest as Harps finished with nine men.
Davin O'Neill, looking offside, gave Cork the lead on 22 minutes when tapping home a Cummins cross shot.
Blaine Curtis levelled for Harps against the run of play six minutes later after Conor O'Grady played him in.
Central defender Kalen Spillane restored Cork's lead with a brilliantly struck free-kick within two minutes, however, before Daryl Horgan shot home a third from Cummins' cross three minutes later.
Striker Curtis got a second goal back for Harps six minutes before the break.
Midfielder Stephen O'Donnell was then the first Harps player to see red on 51 minutes for a foul on Derek O'Brien.
Cummins then got his first goal of the game on 78 minutes to wrap up the points before Harps had defender Keith Cowan sent off for a second booking seconds later.
Cummins then headed his second of the night five minutes from time.
Mervue United 0 Limerick FC 1
JUST as he did at Tolka Park a fortnight ago, supersub Peter Hynes scored a late winner to keep Limerick on the promotion trail.
Limerick named the same starting eleven that beat Wexford Youths 6-0 last week, but Mervue were never going to roll over as easily as they gave as good as they got in the first half.
Mervue in fact had the ball in the Limerick net on 37 minutes but Dave O'Brien's effort was ruled out for a foul on Limerick keeper Barry Ryan.
Limerick upped the pressure in the second half and Sean Brosnan brought a good save from Ger Hanley eight minutes in.
Pressing hard late on, Limerick got their reward on 84 minutes. Brosnan did well to put over a decent cross form the left and Hynes headed home.
Wexford Youths 3 Athlone Town 3
DEAN BROADERS salvaged an unlikely point as Wexford Youths came from behind three times - the third equaliser deep in stoppage time - as they put last week's 6-0 mauling at Limerick behind them.
Dave Ryan put Athlone ahead on 13 minutes with Youths levelling through Darragh Walshe six minutes before half-time.
Somewhat against the run of play, Town regained the lead on 64 minutes. Ryan did the spade work to set up Noel McGee for a tap-in.
Topscorer Danny Furlong had Youths level on 72 minutes only for Damien Rushe to restore Town's lead eleven minutes later.
But three minutes into stoppage time, defender Broaders struck a third equaliser as Youths earned a battling point. |
