Longford beat Waterford to go fifth
Sunday, 02 October 2011 01:43
Longford Town 2 Waterford United 1
Thomas Crawley scored for the second week running to help Longford leapfrog Waterford up to fifth place in the First Division table.
Tony Cousins Midlanders finished with ten men, however, as they had former Northern Ireland and one-time Manchester United winger Keith Gillespie sent off at the death.
Town had the lead on nine minutes when striker Crawley got on the end of midfielder Cathal Brady’s superb cross to fire past Kevin Burns.
That became 2-0 on the half hour mark. Blues failed to defend the first corner of the game and Graham Dowling headed home.
Blues battled back throughout the second half and pulled a goal back on 80 minutes, Gary Dunphy heading in a Paul Phelan cross.
Town held out for the three points, though, with the only blemish on their display veteran Gillespie’s dismissal for dissent three minutes into stoppage time when he appeared to applaud referee Keith Callanan for booking him for time-wasting at a free-kick.
