Monaghan win in Limerick to consolidate second spot
Friday, 22 July 2011 21:32

Limerick FC 0 Monaghan United 2

Limerick had prominent new signing Joe Gamble sent off as goals from John Reilly and David Byrne gave Monaghan a big win at Jackman Park.

With Gamble and fellow new recruit Denis Behan prominent on their home debut, Limerick started well. But it was Roddy Collins' Monaghan who found themselves a goal up at the interval.

That came on 36 minutes. Monaghan counterattacked and a terrific cross from the right was controlled by John Reilly who then fired past Barry Ryan.

Limerick couldn't get the goal back throughout the second half and substitute Byrne struck two minutes into added time to stab home following a corner.

A minute later midfielder Gamble was dismissed for a second booking.

Shelbourne 4 Salthill Devon 1

Despite Ronan Forde's heroics, Shelbourne made it nine wins on the spin to go into the summer break 10 points clear at the top of the First Division table.

Forde, a nephew of Republic of Ireland keeper David Forde, produced a string of quality saves to save bottom side Devon from a hiding.

Devon stunned Shels to take a ninth minute lead. Home keeper Dean Delaney dropped an Emmett Shaw corner and Gerry Dolan scrambled home the loose ball.

David Cassidy rattled the Devon crossbar almost immediately as Shels hit back to level on 16 minutes when Philly Hughes drove home a direct free-kick for his 12th goal of the season.

Conan Byrne headed home a Cassidy free-kick to put Shels in front on 53 minutes.

Cassidy then put fellow midfielder Colm James in to rifle home the third goal on 72 minutes before substitute Chris Mulhall added the fourth three minutes from the end.

Mervue United 1 Waterford United 1

Waterford came from behind to earn a point at Fahy's Field despite finishing with ten men.

Mervue, fresh from their win at Monaghan last week, hit the ground running and were in front on 17 minutes when Peter Dravins set up recent signings Pat Hoban to score with a superb left foot drive.

But poor defending saw substitute Paul Phelan levell for Blues on 64 minutes - just three minutes after coming on.

Blues then had midfielder Seamus Long sent off for a foul on John Mountney, his second yellow card, in the 75th minute.

Wexford Youths 0 Finn Harps 2

Blaine Curtis scored twice as Finn Harps ended a run of three defeats to win well at Ferrycarrig Park.

Harps took the lead on 11 minutes when Kevin McHugh headed Marc Brolly’s cross against a post and strike partner Curtis scooped home the rebound.

Seven minutes later,  Curtis was there again to run through onto an Aaron McElwee pass, hold off a defender, and shoot home his second.
