Shels beat Blues to stay top
Friday, 08 July 2011 22:13

Shelbourne 2 Waterford United 1

SHELBOURNE came from behind to maintain their seven point lead at the top of the table - with a seventh straight win - and all but end Waterford's revival hopes.

With three wins on the spin, Blues took their best form of the season to Tolka Park where they had won on their last two visits.

And it looked promising again for Paul O'Brien's charges as they took the lead on 16 minutes when Willie John Kiely's header, following a Conor Sinnott ball into the Shels box, beat keeper Dean Delaney.

Shels levelled 11 minutes into the second half, however, when Conan Byrne was allowed a second chance to cross and David Cassidy fired past Kevin Burns.

Their tails up, Shels pressed and got their winner on 77 minutes.

Burns, who had just produced a superb save from a Philly Hughes free kick, was beaten by Byrne who turned well to fire home.

Cork City 1 Salthill Devon 0

HAVING hit a double last week, midfielder Shane Duggan proved Cork's saviour again as they laboured to a narrow win over bottom side Salthill at Turner's Cross.

Despite eight corners, Cork failed to find a way past Devon keeper Ronan Forde in the first half.

Tommy Dunne's side finally made the breakthrough on 63 minutes when Duggan's shot squirmed to the net.

The vital three points keeps Cork second in the table on goal difference.

Wexford Youths 1 Monaghan United 2

A LATE winner from Michael Isichei earned Roddy Collins' Monaghan a big three points at Ferrycarrig Park.

New signing Keith Quinn scored on his debut to give Monaghan a 27th minute lead.

Youths hit back to level from Dean Broaders' 63rd minute penalty.

But Noel O'Connor's struggling side failed to hold out as substitute Isichei snatched the three points with the winner four minutes from time.

Mervue United 1 Athlone Town 2

NOEL McGEE scored twice as Athlone came from behind to beat 10-man Mervue at Fahy's Field.

Rory Gaffney gave the home crowd something to shout about with a thumping long-range shot to open the scoring on 27 minutes.

But Town hit back to level four minutes into the second half when McGee's shot flew in off a post following Eoin Monaghan's cross from the left.

McGee was there again to win it for Town 15 minutes later. Again Monaghan provided the delivery with McGee's powerful shot beating Ger Hanley.

Three minutes later Mervue had midfielder Jason Molloy sent off for a foul on Kevin Williamson.
