Longford Town 1 Monaghan United 3
MONAGHAN UNITED needed late goals from Shane Grimes and Declan O’Brien to beat nine-man Longford at Flancare Park and move up to second in the table.
Though Longford had both Graham Dowling and Keith Gillespie sent off, they came within five minutes of snatching a point.
The first red card on 24 minutes led to Monaghan’s lead goal from a penalty.
Defender Dowling was shown a straight red card by referee Phil Caschera for hauling down O’Brien who promptly rifled home the spot kick.
Former Northern Ireland international and Manchester United winger Gillespie was then also shown a straight red card on 75 minutes following a clash with Eric Foley.
But Town battled away and equalised on 81 minutes when striker Don Cowan raced through the visitors’ defence before shooting past Gabriel Sava.
Grimes restored Monaghan’s lead on 88 minutes, however, when shooting home from just inside the area.
O’Brien then added a third three minutes into stoppage time, converting a cross from Jason Marks.
Salthill Devon 0 Finn Harps 4
KEVIN McHUGH scored a hat-trick as Harps inflicted a sixth successive defeat on bottom side Salthill who finished with nine men at Drom.
McHugh struck as early as seven minutes - to send Harps on their way to their biggest win of the season - when chipping Devon keeper Ronan Forde.
Strike partner Blaine Curtis doubled the lead five minutes into the second half, scooping home the rebound after Forde parried a low shot.
McHugh ended the game as a contest just after the hour mark with his second of the night from a simple tap-in.
Harps fourth, and McHugh’s hat-trick, arrived on 69 minutes when he shot home from a free-kick.
Devon then had both James Whelan, for a second yellow, and then player-coach Mike Quirke, for dissent towards the fourth official, sent off inside two minutes over the last quarter.
