Monaghan continue to press for promotion
Saturday, 11 June 2011 21:14
Salthill Devon 2 Monaghan United 5
THREE goals in eight minutes saw Monaghan come from behind to blow bottom side Salthill Devon away at Drom to maintain their push for promotion.
Striker Michael Isichei fired Monaghan in front with his first goal for the club on 26 minutes.
But Devon hit back to level five minutes before the break when Ciprian Straut shot home a penalty after Philip Byrne had fouled Gearoid O’Leidhinn.
Devon then took the lead inside the opening minute of the second half, Victory Collins tapping home the rebound after Gabriel Sava could only parry a drive from Straut.
But Monaghan equalised against the run of play when Jason  Marks shot past Ronan Forde on 66 minutes.
Monaghan then took control with John Reilly scoring twice on 74 and 80 minutes before Isichei added his second of the night two minutes later.
The win moves Monaghan level on points with second-placed Cork City (with a game in hand) whom they host at Goratkeegan on Friday night.
Longford Town 1 Limerick FC 2
TEENAGER Sean Brosnan was Limerick’s goalscoring hero for the second week running.
The 18-year-old striker, who scored twice on his full debut in the FAI Ford Cup win at Sacred Heart last Sunday, struck within seconds of the restart for what proved the winner.
Chris Breen put Limerick in front against the run of play on 17 minutes.
Town levelled six minutes later. Mark Salmon did well to set up Don Cowan who found the net with a terrific finish.
Limerick’s win moves them six points ahead of fifth-placed Longford.
It now looks like a four-way battle at the top for the three promotion spots on offer - two automatic and the play-off spot.
Limerick host leaders Shelbourne at Jackman Park on Friday night.
Finn Harps 1 Waterford United 0
KEVIN McHUGH scored the only goal of the game at Finn Park as Harps maintained their progress under new boss Peter Hutton with a second win in three games.
The goal came on 34 minutes when midfielder Aaron McElwee pounced on a poor clearance by Blues’ goalkeeper Kevin Burns to set up McHugh to score.
