Wexford Youths 0 Shelbourne 1 A LATE, late Conan Byrne goal restored Shelbourne's leadership of the First Division table thanks to this win at Ferrycarrig Park. Winger Byrne, who'd also scored Shels' winner last time out at home to Longford, had just had a shout for a penalty waved away when he struck for the game's only goal on 89 minutes. The win, Shels' fifth 1-0 victory in six games, edged Alan Mathews' Reds back two points clear at the top of the table.  Limerick FC 0 Cork City 0 LIMERICK frustrated Cork City at Jackman Park to knock them off the top of the table as Tommy Dunne's unbeaten Rebels had to settle for a sixth draw of the season. Cork were the better side in a poor first half. The game opened up a little in the second with Cork midfielder Shane Duggan shooting over the top from six yards early on. Limerick's best chance came on 73 minutes when Jeffrey Judge burst through to cross for Paudie Quinn whose shot came back off a post.  Monaghan United 1 Finn Harps 0 SEAN BRENNAN scored a solitary winner for the second week running as Monaghan made it three wins on the spin to move level on points with second-placed Cork City, with a game in hand. The only goal of the game came three minutes before half-time. Harps' defender Paddy McLaughlin was booked for a challenge on Ryan Brennan and namesake Sean rattled the free-kick past Ciaran Gallagher and into the net.  Mervue United 2 Longford Town 1 TOM KING hit a late winner as Mervue bounced back from their 3-0 defeat at Cork City last week. Midfielder King had scored both goals in Mervue's most recent win over Harps and he worked the oracle again right at the death. With 93 minutes up on the watch, Rory Gaffney got away down the left flank to cross for King to fire past Paul Hunt. Striker Gaffney had put Mervue in front nine minutes into the second half when pouncing on the rebound to stab home after Hunt had saved his initial header from a King cross. Mark Salmon equalised for Town on 70 minutes when scoring from Lee Roche's cross from the right.  Athlone Town 2 Salthill Devon 0 AN OWN goal and a penalty from Kevin Williamson ended a run of four straight defeats for Athlone. The opening goal came on 22 minutes when a deep cross was turned home by an unidentified defender at the back post. There was no doubt about the second scorer six minutes before half-time, however, as midfielder Williamson shot his penalty past keeper Ronan Forde.  |
