Waterford kick-started their season with the biggest win of the campaign to make it three wins from four games.
It's the opposite for Mike Kerley's Athlone as they slumped to a fourth succeesive 3-0 defeat in all competitions.
The Blues had the ideal start with the lead goal after just four minutes.
Paul Murphy’s diagonal ball was latched onto by Willie John Kiely who lobbed the advancing Town keeper Michael Schlingermann.
The lead was doubled on 26 minutes when midfielder David Breen fired home a Conor Sinnott corner.
It got better for Blues six minutes into the second half when Murphy poked home number three from substitute Brain Nolan’s cross.
