Cork's late leveller moves them back top of First
Friday, 06 May 2011 22:13

CORK CITY sit joint-top of the First Division with Shelbourne and Longford Town after snatching a late equaliser against the Midlanders.

Cork City  1   Longford Town  1

Jamie Murphy proved Cork City's supersub with a late equaliser to put them top of the table again, for 24 hours at least.

Just minutes after coming on, Murphy got free in the box to head home Gavin Kavanagh's cross with just two minutes of normal time remaining.

In-form Lognford had led from the sixth minute when Austin Skelly's shot looped over City keeper James McCarthy for his third goal of the season.

Monaghan United   1    Limerick FC  1

Goals in the first and final minutes resulted in these two promotion-hopefuls sharing the spoils at Gortakeegan.

Pat Scully's Shannonsiders had the perfect start when attacking midfielder Paudie Quinn fired them in front after just 18 seconds.

Monaghan then levelled right on 90 minutes when defender Philip Byrne headed home a corner from Ryan Brennan.

Finn Harps  0  Wexford Youths 1

Danny Furlong ensured a happy, if very long, trip back to the southeast for Wexford Youths as his third goal in successive games saw them earn the three points at Finn Park.

A fifth defeat on the spin emphasised the task facing Harps' new management duo of Peter Hutton and Felix Healy as the team has now not scored in almost eleven hours of football.

Furlong's matchwinner came four minutes from time when he fired past Ciaran Gallagher.

Waterford United   1    Mervue United  0

Conor Sinnott scored for the second week running to maintain Waterford's revival with this narrow defeat of improving Mervue.

The game's only goal came eleven minutes into the second half when midfielder Sinnott shot home from the penalty spot after Mervue defender Eric Browne was sent off for bringing down Keith Quinn inside the area.
