PHILIP HUGHES bagged his fourth goal of the season as Shelbourne returned to the top of the First Division with victory in Waterford.
Waterford United  0  Shelbourne  1
A fourth goal of the campaign for Philly Hughes moved Shelbourne back top of the First Division table, despite their having to play for nearly an hour with ten men.
Hughes struck seven minutes into the second half when a long-range free-kick from full-back Lorcan Fitzgerald came back off Kevin Burns' post and the striker pounced to blast the ball to the roof of the net.
The main note of a tight first half was the sending off of Shels’ midfielder Chris Mulhall on 35 minutes.
Mulhall was first booked for a foul on Blues’ Kenny Browne and was then shown a second yellow seconds later for throwing the ball into the ground in disgust.
Waterford midfielder Paul Murphy was also sent off two minutes into stoppage time for a heavy challenge on Fitzgerald.
This was a third successive defeat for promotion hopefuls Waterford and sees them way off the pace in the bottom half of the table.
