Saturday, 19 March 2011 22:33

Longford Town  2  Mervue United   1

An own goal and a stoppage time Chris Deans freak winner gave Longford a second successive win to move them up to third in the table.

A controversial goal saw Mervue take the lead on 35 minutes when a shot from Mike Tierney spun out after hitting the underside of the crossbar. An assistant referee flagged to give the goal.

Mervue defender Eric Browne then scored at the wrong end for the second week running to put Town level on 77 minutes when heading a corner from Jacques Morley into his own net.

Central defender Chris Deans then won it for Tony Cousins’ Midlanders in the first minute of added time when his long punt down the pitch was completely misjudged by Mervue 'keeper Ger Hanley to enter the net.

Salthill Devon  1   Athlone Town  1

French striker Etanda Nkololo earned Salthill their first point of the season as they came from behind against ten man Athlone at Drom.

Town took the lead on five minutes when Gary Higgins’ shot squirmed under the body of Devon ‘keeper Ronan Forde to enter the net.

But Devon hit back on 40 minutes. Nkololo got possession and unleashed a shot from the edge of the area that beat Michael Schlingermann.

Town then had midfielder Kevin Williamson sent off on 62 minutes for a tackle from behind on Nkololo.
