CORK CITY moved clear at the top of the First Division after securing a 1-0 Munster derby victory over Limerick at Turner's Cross.  Cork City  1  Limerick  FC  0   A goal from Derek O'Brien beat Limerick in the Munster derby at Turner's Cross to put Cork City top of the First Division table.  Before a crowd of 2,165, the game's only goal came on 18 minutes.  Left winger O'Brien, on his first start for Tommy Dunne's side, cut in from his flank, beat defender Brian O'Callaghan before unleashing a shot that beat keeper Barry Ryan at the near post.   Finn Harps  2  Monaghan United  2  A brace of goals apiece from Kevin McHugh and Eric Foley saw the spoils shared in a thrilling contest at Finn Park.  McHugh put Harps deservedly in front in first half stoppage time when he slotted a penalty past Gabriel Sava after debutant Raymond Foy was bundled over in the box.  Foley then got his first of the night to level for Roddy Collins side ten minutes into the second.  But McHugh restored Harps' lead on 65 minutes when collecting James Doherty's quick throw to fire a shot across Sava and into the net.  A stunning long-range shot by Foley beat Ciaran Gallagher in the Harps goal to pull Monaghan level again on 73 minutes.  Harps had Tommy Bonner sent off six minutes later following a clash with Sean Brennan.   Shelbourne  4   Wexford Youths  2   Shelbourne thrilled their fans with a big victory in their first home game of the season to make it two wins from two.  Alan Mathews' Reds blitzed Youths with three goals in five minutes. The first arrived in the 11th minute when Conan Byrne controlled the ball on his chest to set-up midfielder Kevin Dawson to shoot home.  Philly Hughes headed home an Ian Ryan cross from the right to double Shels' lead three minutes later.  Within a further two minutes it was 3-0 when defender Stephen Paisley bundled home after Youths failed to clear a cross into their area.  It was 4-0 on 44 minutes when the impressive Ryan again did the damage down the right to cross for David Cassidy to apply the finish.  Youths got a goal back right on the blow of the interval when Danny Furlong, who had been taken down by Barry Clancy, dusted himself down to fire a penalty past Dean Delaney.  Youths got another goal back on 65 minutes when substitute Garret McCurtin volleyed home after Shels failed to clear a corner.  |
