Mervue claim derby spoils

Salthill Devon 1 Mervue United 2

First half goals from Tom King and Nicky Curran earned Mervue local bragging rights as Salthill finished with ten men in the Galway derby at Drom.

Kevin Crehan set up ex-Longford midfielder King to score on his debut, firing past keeper Ronan Forde, after 25 minutes. Six minutes later Curran let fly from distance on the left to beat Forde again.

Devon hit back on 39 minutes when Victor Collins headed past Ireland youth international keeper Ger Hanley from Cian McBrien’s free-kick.

Devon’s hopes of a comeback weren’t helped when defender Eugene Greaney was sent off for a foul on King on 72 minutes, his second booking.

Longford Town 1 Shelbourne 2

David Cassidy hit a late winner - and an early goal of the season contender at that - as promotion hopefuls Shelbourne came from behind to win at Flancare Park.

Ex-Shamrock Rovers' striker Don Cowan was credited with bundling Town in front from Jacques Morley’s fifth minute corner.

But before a decent crowd of around 700, Shels hit back through Conan Byrne two minutes before half-time when the winger availed of a mistake by Michael Lee to shoot past Alvin Rouse.

Cassidy then won it for Alan Mathews’ Dubliners on 78 minutes with a stunning volley that gave Rouse no chance.
