Biography

Alan Mathews was appointed manager of Cork City shortly after the conclusion of the 2007 season to replace Damien Richardson. Mathews was the most successful manager in the history of Longford Town F.C., having delivered the club their first senior trophies.

Mathews enjoyed a long playing career in the Airtricity League, most notably with Shamrock Rovers, where he won league medals in 1986 and 1987 and also the FAI Cup in 1987. He was capped by the Republic of Ireland at Under-15 and Under-18 level.

Having retired from playing, Mathews became Assistant Manager at Shelbourne. He was appointed Manager of Longford Town in July 2002 and won the FAI Cup in 2003, the first senior trophy the club had ever won. He followed up on that success by guiding Longford to the FAI Cup and League Cup double the following year.

Longford Town were relegated at the end of the 2007 season, although the reason for their demotion was more to do with the off-field issues that resulted in the club receiving a six points deduction. Mathews also guided his side to the FAI Ford Cup final of '07, narrowly losing to Cork City in the decider.

Shortly after the cup final, Mathews was unveiled as the new manager of Cork City. He brought Setanta Sports Cup success to Cork City during his spell in charge of the Rebel Army but parted company with the club. Shortly after, Mathews was appointed manager of Drogheda United.
