Monaghan blew their First Division title hopes and automatic promotion as Terryland Park hosted a shock title twist on successive nights.

Like Bohemians in the Premier Division on Friday night, Monaghan went into the game knowing that winning their final two games would win them the league.

But this defeat effectively gives Derry City the title, given they are three points ahead of now second-placed Waterford United with a better goal difference of nine ahead of Friday’s final games.

Mervue stunned Mick Cooke’s side to take the lead on the half hour when Dave Goldbey headed home Alex Lee’s corner.

But Monaghan responded immediately to level within three minutes. Cathal O’Connor put over a deep cross and Aidan Collins headed past Ger Hanley at the back post.

Rory Gaffney got second-bottom Mervue’s winner on the hour mark when punishing a dreadful defensive mistake.

Monaghan left-back Shane Grimes misplaced a free-kick to a fellow defender and midfielder Gaffney raced in to shoot past Gabriel Sava.
