Patrick McEleney scored twice for the second week running as Derry edged a major step towards the First Division title. Stephen Kenny’s side are now three points clear of second-placed Monaghan United with just two games to play. And though Derry are away to Monaghan in the last match, their superior goal difference is as good as another point. Bottom side Devon stunned Derry to snatch a 17th minute lead. Stephen Parkhouse lost possession and Robbie Porter blasted home off the underside of the bar. But the lead lasted scarcely a minute as McEleney got the ball from a throw-in and rifled a shot past keeper Ronan Forde from 30 yards. Forde was then at fault to gift Derry the lead on 29 minutes when allowing McEleney’s shot to bounce past him and into the net. Parkhouse atoned for his earlier mistake by extending Derry’s lead four minutes later when heading home Mark Farren’s free-kick. Midfielder Barry Molloy got in on the act to make it 4-1 six minutes after the break, volleying past Forde. A low left-footer from James McLean added the fifth goal on 73 minutes. |
