Aidan Lynch's first goal of the season helped move ten man Monaghan back to within a point of leaders Derry City.
Central defender Lynch brought a dour first half to life on 17 minutes when heading home a Shane Grimes cross following Cathal O’Connor’s short free kick.
Mick Cooke's side didn't seal their win until late on when midfielder Alan Byrne added a second goal on 77 minutes, also with a header from a Barry Clancy corner.
But winger Clancy was then sent off seven minutes later for a second booking.
But it scarcely mattered as Darragh Hanaphy added Monaghan's third goal in the first minute of stoppage time.
