This midlands derby never came to life as it finished in a most disappointing scoreless draw.
Longford central defender Philip Byrne did have the ball in the Athlone net on the hour mark, but it was ruled out for offside.
Athlone finished the stronger with Declan O'Brien and Austin Skelly coming close, but Longford held out for a point.
Striker O'Brien was sent off on the final whistle for remonstrating with referee Sean Grant.
