Philly Hughes scored twice as Monaghan United put their EA Sports Cup final disappointment behind them as they came from 2-0 down to beat Waterford United 4-2 in a cracking game at Gortakeegan.
Mick Cooke's side remain a point behind leaders Derry City, who only drew 1-1 at Wexford Youths, and can now go two points clear should they win their game in hand with Salthill Devon.
Willie John Kiely's eighth goal in five games put Waterford in front on four minutes when he rose at the back post to head home Liam Kearney's cross.
Vinny Sullivan then doubled the lead just before the half hour with another header from a Kearney delivery.
But Hughes began the revival on 64 minutes with Cathal O'Connor levelling the scores six minutes later.
Sean Brennan then headed home O'Connor's corner to put Monaghan in front before Hughes got his second to seal it on 85 minutes.
