Monaghan United availed of Derry City only managing a 2-2 draw at home to Athlone Town to narrow the Candystripes' lead at the top to two points as they trounced Wexford Youths 4-1 at Ferrycarrig Park. Karl Bermingham had an eventful night for Mick Cooke's in-form side as he scored two penalties before being sent off as Youths finished with nine men. Bermingham put Monaghan ahead form a penalty on 31 minutes with Aidan Collins doubling the lead eight minutes into the second half. Youths then lost keeper Packie Holden who was sent off on the hour for pulling down Philly Hughes with Bermingham slotting home his second spot kick of the night. Substitute Paul Whelan got Monaghan's fourth goal on 72 minutes before Bermingham and Youths' Anthony Wolfe tangled and were both sent off. Gary Sheahan got Youths' consolation goal on 82 minutes. |
