Shane Duggan’s winner kept Cork on the fringe of the promotion play-off spots as Town slumped to a tenth defeat of the season.

Midfielder Duggan had an eventful few minutes around his match winning goal just before the half hour.

First Duggan struck a post with a free kick after Shane Barrett had been impeded by Des Hope on 27 minutes.

Duggan was then booked a minute later for a tackle on Kieran Moloney.

Scarcely a minute after that, Duggan skipped into the Town box and fired a shot past Michael Schlingermann.

The Town keeper prevented Cork extending their lead on 52 minutes with a super save as Brian McCarthy’s mis-directed header looked set for his own net.

Eight minutes later, McCarthy, booked in the first half, was sent off for a foul on Davin O’Neill, his second yellow.

Town rallied late on with Declan O’Brien bringing a good stop from Mark McNulty with a free-kick as City held on for a big three points.
