Kevin McHugh scored a late winner as Harps won for the first time in five games at the Athlone Stadium.

Athlone’s hopes were dashed six minutes before the break when right-back Mark Nolan was shown a straight red card by Wexford referee Sean Grant for an overzealous challenge on Harps’ striker McHugh.

McHugh had earlier brought a good stop from Town keeper Chris Bennion with Bennion again doing well to block the follow-up shot from Tommy Bonner.

But Bennion was outfoxed on 74 minutes when conceding the only goal of the game.

McHugh did well to control a cross in from the right before squeezing the ball past Bennion at his near post as Harps leapfrogged Town to move up to eighth in the First Division table.
