Dinny Corcoran scored a hat-trick as Shelbourne battled from behind to get back to winning ways in style at Tolka Park.
Gordon Watson headed Athlone in front from Robbie Benson's 13th minute cross.
Alan Byrne levelled for Shels when finishing a surging run with a daisycutter from 30 yards.
But Watson nodded Athlone back in front two minutes before the break from Tom O'Halloran's assist.
Shels got the best possible start to the second half when Philly Gorman's header beat Chris Bennion.
Corcoran headed home his first of the night from David Cassidy's corner to put Shels in front for the first time on 75 minutes.
Within a minute Corcoran struck again when tucking a shot into the far corner.
The hat-trick arrived on 87 minutes from Gorman's cross.
Stephen Relihan pulled a goal back for Athlone on 90 minutes. But Adelberto Pinto restored Shels' three goal winning margin straight from the kick off.
