Athlone blew a 4-0 lead as Monaghan staged a dramatic late, late comeback to take home an unlikely point. Robbie Benson hit a first half double to appear to put Athlone in control at Lisseywoollen. Niall Scullion set up striker Benson to fire Town in front after 22 minutes. Benson was then there again just past the half hour to head home another Scullion cross. Gordon Watson stretched Town’s lead two minutes into the second half. It was 4-0 on 65 minutes when Scullion got a deserved goal with a simple tap in after a mistake by Monaghan keeper Gabriel Sava. Philly Hughes began the revival from his first penalty of the night on 71 minutes after Darragh Hanaphy was taken down inside the area. Monnaghan then produced a grandstand finish, scoring three times in eight minutes. First Alan Byrne reduced the arrears further when heading their second goal on 85 minutes. Hanaphy then got his head to a corner to make it 4-3 right on 90 minutes. The real drama unfolded three minutes into added time when defender Brian Gartland won a penalty with Hughes showing nerves of steel to drive the spot kick past keeper Chris Bennion to complete a remarkable comeback. |
