Athlone scored for the first time in five games to lift themselves up into the top half of the table as three players were sent off at Lisseywollen. Brendan Place’s side should have been in front inside the opening minute of a full-blooded midlands derby but Austin Skelly’s penalty was parried by Longford keeper Stephen Conlon and Richie O’Hanlon shot the rebound off a post. Robbie Farrell did put Athlone in front on 10 minutes when latching onto a long ball to outpace defender Victor Ekanem and shoot past Conlon. O’Hanlon doubled Athlone’s lead on 34 minutes when shooting home from Stephen Caffrey’s flick following a Robbie Benson corner. Athlone defender Des Hope was the first to be sent off on 66 minutes for an apparent elbow on Longford striker Peter Hynes. Longford’s Chris Deans followed Hope for an early shower on 75 minutes for a second yellow card after a foul on substitute Noel McGee. McGee was then hauled down by last man Thomas Hyland who was sent off seven minutes from time. |
