Shelbourne hit the woodwork and finished with ten men as they had to settle for only a point at Athlone Stadium.

In-form Eric Foley rattled the Town crossbar from a free-kick on 15 minutes to register the only note of the first half.

Town blew their best chance of a goal on 73 minutes when Austin Skelly played Robbie Farrell in on goal, but his weak shot was comfortably saved by Dean Delaney.

Shels then had midfielder Colin O’Brien sent off in stoppage time when he was shown a straight red card for a lunging tackle on Town defender Brian McCarthy by referee John McLoughlin.
