Goals from John Lester and victor Ekanem earned Longford revenge in the midlands derby at Flancare Park as Athlone finished with ten men.

A dour game finally sprung to life in the last minute of the first half when Longford right-back Niall O’Reilly was taken down inside the box by Kieran Maloney. Lester drove the penalty past Michael Schlingermann.

Midfielder Ekanem doubled Longford’s lead on 56 minutes. Schlingermann could only parry a shot from Mark Salmon and Ekanem hit home the rebound.

Austin Skelly got a goal back for Athlone against the run of play on 73 minutes before being sent off ten minutes later for a second booking.

The win sees Longford leapfrog Athlone up to ninth in the table.
