The woodwork deprived Salthill Devon of a deserved point on their Airtricity debut at Drom.

As it was, Austin Skelly's tenth minute goal, when he turned well on the edge of the area to shoot past keeper Ronan Forde, won the game for Brendan Place’s Athlone.

Skelly also fired a shot off the Devon bar on 67 minutes before the home side almost drew level eight minutes from time.

Substute Shane Browne let fly from distance only to see his effort come back off the crossbar.
