Monaghan United achieved their first win of the season when they defeated Kildare County 5-1 at Kingspan Century Park. Scarcely 30 seconds had elapsed in the first half when they had their first score. A long clearance out of United’s defence was gathered by Kildare’s keeper he tried to pick out his No.2 with a long pass but this was intercepted by Sean Brennan and from at least 35 yards out his volley swerved wickedly to the back of the net. Although it was non stop attacking thereafter from United they had to wait until the 34th minute to register their second goal. Again it was a long ball this time from Alan Byrne which found Karl Bermingham inside the area, with a brilliant back heel he picked out Paul Whelan who from close in belted the ball home. United continued to dominate to the half time whistle. After the restart United continued in attacking mode and almost from the kick off McKenna came close. The half was only 7 minutes old when United were awarded a free kick about 35 yards out close too the right touchline. Barry Clancy took it and his swerving strike beat everyone and ended in the top corner of the net. Three minutes later it was 4-0 when a long strike was sent in from the left side line, Paul Whelan got to it and he fired home his second of the night. However in 69th minute Monaghan United were dealt a bit of a set back, Kildare won the ball in their own half and quickly broke down field with some very good interchanging of passes. Dave O’ Riordan was put clean through and he coolly slotted the ball past Ronan McGann in the United goal. Mick Cook substituted McKenna, Tierney and Bermingham with Hanaphy, McCrossan and Freeman coming on. This freshened up the side and Hanaphy in particular was very industrious and it wasn’t surprising when he got on the score sheet. With only a minute of normal time remaining United were awarded a free kick outside the area, the free resulted in Baba Issaka being sent off for a second yellow card. The free was taken short, Alan Byrne headed it on and Hanaphy was on hand to finish from close range. Monaghan United: McGann, Whelan, Clancy, Byrne, Gartland, Tierney, Brennan, O’Connor, McKenna, Bermingham, Grimes. Subs: McCrossan, Freeman, Hanaphy, Lynch, Treacy. Kildare County: Flynn, Garry, Thorpe, Hegarty, Osbourne, Issaka, Brady, Byrne, Lynch, O’Riordan, Farrell. Subs: McLoughlin, Kinsella, Dunne, McDonnell, Rigney. |
