UCD maintained their scintillating start to the season with a sixth straight win to move three points clear at the top of the First Division table. In a rip-roaring top of the table clash at Tolka Park before a crowd of 1,229, Shelbourne finished with nine men while UCD also had a player sent off late on. Martin Russell’s fit, young side punished poor defending to take the lead on 17 minutes when David McMillan raced in behind from Ronan Finn’s pass to drive the ball past Dean Delaney. Delaney was beaten again on 26 minutes. Skipper Finn once more split the Shels defence to send John Reilly away and his fierce shot took a deflection off David McGill to enter the net at the near post. Substitute Paddy Madden headed a goal back from Shels on 47 minutes, but they then had David McGill sent off for striking Chris Mulhall on 55 minutes. Reilly sealed the win, though, when getting UCD’s third goal with a cracking strike on 65 minutes. Shels had David Cassidy sent off for a second booking on 78 minutes with UCD defender Brian Shortall also seeing red for a bad challenge on Alan Keely three minutes from time. |
