Dean Delaney produced a string of brilliant saves to all but end former club Waterford’s promotion hopes.

The win moves Shels back up to second in the table, four points behind UCD with a game in hand, and guarantees them a play-off at worst.

Shels snatched the lead with the only goal of the game after eleven minutes.

David McAllister’s terrific ball put Tony Griffths in on goal and the striker drilled his shot under Michael Devine from an acute angle.

Delaney then excelled with saves from Alan Carey, John Kearney and Graham Cummins before the break before making a brilliant save to thwart Willie John Kiely on 64 minutes.

Substitute Derek Doyle might have doubled Shels’ lead, but shot against a post five minutes from time. Cummins then hit the bar for Blues in stoppage time as Shels held out.
