Noel McGee scored twice to give Athlone their first win in 14 games to bring Wexford back down to earth with a bump following their win at promotion-chasing Sporting Fingal earlier in the week.

The opening goal came a minute before the break when Mark Salmon and Gary Murphy combined down the right with the cross to the back post headed home by McGee.

McGee got his second on 56 minutes following an attack down the opposite flank.

Tom O’Halloran put Robbie Benson away to cross from the end line for the unmarked McGee to side foot home.
