Paul Walsh's early goal scraped a vital win to move Waterford to within two points of third-placed Sporting Fingal.

Blues quickly put their EA SPORTS Cup final disappointment of Saturday behind them to take a 13th minute lead.

Seamus Long’s ball over the top saw Walsh beat the Town offside trap to race in and shoot past Aaron Shanahan.

But Town almost levelled on 27 minutes, Liam Lynch firing wide from a Michael Foley cross.

Town, under former Blues boss Gareth Cronin, started the second half brightly and within a minute Derek Glynn blazed wide.

Shanahan gifted Willie John Kiely a clear-cut chance to double Blues' lead on 67 minutes, but the keeper redeemed himself to tip the ball round a post as Waterford limped to an unconvincing win.
