Waterford completed a terrific week with a rousing win at Lissywoollen despite playing for over an hour with just nine men.

Topscorer Graham Cummins was sent off as early as the 21st minute following a clash with Town defender Niall O’Reilly.

Dublin referee Rob Rogers then also gave Blues' defender Kenny Browne a straight red card for a tackle on Robbie Benson just six minutes later.

But Waterford regrouped superbly and struck for the lead goal on 74 minutes when Kevin Murray knocked down John Kearney’s cross, following a short corner, for Vinny Sullivan to shoot home.

Rogers then gave Blues a penalty on 85 minutes after Murray was fouled by Des Hope and Alan Carey scored from the spot.

Struggling Athlone, beaten 6-1 at Limerick last week, got a goal back two minutes from time when Benson, looking offside, square the ball to give Noel McGee a tap-in.
