UCD bounced back to winning ways to move to within two points of leaders Shelbourne with a facile win over Monaghan at the UCD Bowl.
Monaghan looked jaded following their extra-time FAI Ford Cup exit to St. Patrick’s Athletic on Monday and College utterly dominated to lead 1-0 at the break. That came on 24 minutes when skipper Ronan Finn rifled home a penalty after the run of Peter McMahon was ended with a foul by Monaghan captain Paul Whelan. Monaghan's teenage keeper Aaron McCarey made two terrific saves to deprive Ciaran Kilduff before UCD eventually made it 2-0 on 61 minutes. Finn’s delightful dinked ball picked out Kilduff in behind the defence and his low cross was tapped home by John Reilly. Substitute Graham Rusk added the third goal a minute into stoppage time. |
